So who’s it gonna be in 2012? Well, I’m thinking at the moment—and certainly for me—it’s going to be The New Royalty. The band hails from Central Jersey and, having spent a good chunk of my life in Central Jersey, growing up surrounded by the likes of Bruce, Southside, and Sonny Kenn, I know that an awful lot of talented folks get lost in those huge shadows. But then a band like The New Royalty makes the scene and breaks out in a way that’s completely unexpected.
The Indie outfit released their debut set, “When Poets Dream”, late in 2010. It took awhile to catch on domestically, but it broke big internationally. And now The New Royalty is beginning to get some well deserved attention stateside. Prior to hearing that The New Royalty was recording a Christmas album, I’d not heard of them. But, let me tell you, “When Poets Dream” kicks ass! The group has a pop rock sound that is both raw and polished—reminding me of some of the best music of the garage band pop rock of the sixties. But they’re not the least bit derivative. I just love the sound. I really do. And it never hurts when your band is fronted by a hot blonde. Just sayin’.
The New Royalty’s Christmas album will feature both covers (“re-invented”) and original music and it’s pretty much finished. Why the group chose a Christmas album as their second big release I don't know, but I, for one, am glad they did. Pay the band a visit at their website and facebook page. Check out “When Poets Dream” and maybe you’ll join me in the enthusiasm of expectation for their coming Christmas record. I’ll bet it kicks ass. Royally.
