First up is a split 7" from Cosmic Thug records featuring Justin & The Cosmics on one side and Pony Boy on the flip. The single was "premiered" a few days ago on Lockeland Springsteen. Let's give you a taste of "Father Christmas" (not the Kinks tune) by Justin & The Cosmics before somebody realizes I found it and pulls down the video.
The split single will launch a series of such splits on the Cosmic Thug imprint, with new singles released every three months or so.
As it happens, neither song is new. "Father Christmas" dates back to 2011 or 2012 while we did a whole piece on the Pony Boy song last year. But having these great tunes preserved on vinyl is, well, its pretty damn exciting to me. There is just something magical about the 45 that CDs and digital downloads will never approach. And I feel sorry for any kid growing up today who may never know the joy of holding that 7" slab in eager hands, laying it on the turntable, lifting the needle and....oh, you know, its a whole thing. A verry ritualistic and spiritual experience for some of us.
As is often the case when I come across something like this, I went to buy the record--because A) I really really want it and B) I want to be able to tell you how easy or difficult it is to navigate a checkout system I haven't used before (and in that order). Silly me, I should have read the Lockeland Springsteen piece a little more thoroughly, because it isn't for sale yet, even though it is shown in the Cosmic Thug Shop. The record will be available for pre-order, allegedly, on Black Friday (that's this Friday). So, I'm up late so I sleep late--make sure you leave me a copy (or two). Official release date hasn't been specified, so far as I can see.
"Santa Says Relax" by Joe Innes & The Cavalcade will officially be released on December 7. This one is digital only and you can find it on Bandcamp or most of the usual digital spots (Amazon, iTunes, etc.). It's not just a really cool song, it's also sound advice as the holidays ratchet up with the cray cray.
