Six13 has done some great Hanukkah tunes in the past, most especially last year's "I Light It". This year, they're doing a "We Are The World" takeoff, complete with faux Springsteen and faux Dylan and (possibly) real Kermit. It's no "I Light It", but the dude with the "We are the 0.2%" sign was pretty funny. You can find "Chanukah Rights" on iTunes and Amazon MP3.

New video from Piney Gir. "Christmas Time" is free to download as part of "XO For The Holidays, Vol. IV".
Stubby's House Exclusive! For the moment, anyway. I don't have any special agreement with the artist on this one (except that I can give it to you), but I don't see it being offered free elsewhere. MariSela MuSik is an emerging artist, currently based in the Netherlands, though her origins are in Caracas, Venezuela. MariSela literally goes wherever the music takes her. She taught herself guitar at the age of 12, studied for awhile at a Music Conservatory in Caracas, dropped out and joined a pop/rock band. That took MariSela to Aruba. After several years in Aruba, the music called MariSela to the Netherlands. And, when the music calls, MariSela follows. Earlier this year, MariSela's debut album "She Confidential" was released. The album was fairly typical of MariSela's sound in that there's nothing "typical" about it at all. This is not an artist who can be musically summed up in a word or two, and not one who will be contained in a box of any kind. MariSela's music is a fusion of all the music and experience of her life. You'll hear elements from folk, pop, rock, Latin, electronic, trip hop, acoustic, world music, and much more. Look for "She Confidential" on Amazon, CD Baby, iTunes and Bandcamp (in a shortened version). I was especially fond of "Some Kind O' Magic", personally; it was delightful and surprising. And there's much more music to listen to from MariSela on her Soundcloud page. MariSela's also producing for other artists these days. And I bring that up only because I love this cover of The Turtles "So Happy Together" she produced for Angel+A. Check it out when you get the chance. MariSela's Christmas single is "Winter Lullaby". Lyrically, it's a bit of a blue Christmas with a broken heart. But there's a calmness about it, as well. Musically, it's a beautiful ballad in an Indie folk/pop vein, but with decidedly ambient overtones. "Winter Lullaby" is included on the the Redruth Radio compilation "Sounds From The Cloud" (available on Bandcamp) and will appear on an upcoming MariSela MuSik album as well (if I understand correctly, a collection that will include some of the tracks MariSela has produced for others, so maybe that "So Happy Together" will put in an appearance). Download "Winter Lullaby" using the Soundcloud widget above. And get to know MariSela better by visiting her on Facebook, Reverbnation, and Tumblir. Oh, she also has a YouTube channel. That's always cool. Earlier this year, we featured a new Halloween song from a band I'm liking a whole lot, The Zig Zag Birds. "Bump In The Night" had that infectious irresistible pop sound that King Harvest hit upon with "Dancing In The Moonlight". One of the members of The Zig Zag Birds, David Rael, also does some solo work and he recently took on the season with this Hanukkah song, "Your Stocking's Filled With Candy, But A Pencil Sharpener's Handy". Take it with a grain of salt (and a chocolate coin). Enjoy the video and share with your friends.
If you haven't gotten your copy of "Under The Influence Of Christmas" from The Grip Weeds yet, what are you waiting for? Christmas?
New from The Shlomones. No mp3 or hard copy version, not that I could find anyway. But I'm guessing the market place will demand one. For now, enjoy the video of "The Rocky Hora Chanukah Song".

You can find it at CD Baby and Jam. The compilation benefits The Blood Center in Milwaukee. Specifically, this is a project to raise funds and awareness for Von Willebrands Disease research. The past two efforts in the series have been Power Pop affairs. From the artists given, it would appear that, while there's plenty of power a-poppin', there are some other styles as well. For example, Tinsley Ellis is a well known Blues artist who has, in the past, recorded for Alligator Records.
One of our favorites from this year is the Foxtails Brigade album "Time Is Passed". You'll find our Preview here. Our favorite song from the album is "I'm Not Really In The Christmas Mood This Year". And the group has just done a video for the song...which means it's poised to become one of our favorite videos of the year.

Al Tuck - O Come O Come Emmanuel *recorded specifically for this collection Another of the popular free annual collections, "Ho Ho Ho Canada" is now in it's third year. This year's set includes 21 tracks, including 9 recorded specifically for this collection. There's a lot of ground covered here, from Folk to Hard Rock and everything in between and on all sides. As usual, I'm late getting to this one and I never have the time to properly evaluate this collection and this year is no exception, but I'll tell you what little I can. "Who Are You?" by The Evaporators is a gas, and made to be on mixtapes (but I do feel I've heard it before, though I can't remember where or when). Kith & Kin sound amazing on the a cappella "Bright Morning Stars". And even more beautiful is "Wintry City" where the only warmth you'll feel is Ivy Mairi's voice. Malajube offer perfect 80s synth pop--and by perfect I mean even better than the 80s synth pop--on "Le Blizzard". And my favorite of what I've heard so far is the peppy Indie Pop number from Les Breastfeeders, "Mantau De Froid". Go ahead and try to not fall in love with that one; it'll get you no matter how hard you try. All free for the download at The Line Of Best Fit. And, if you missed them before, you can still get Volume 1 and Volume 2 of this precious series. Maybe next year, someone will give us a Hanukkah tune. What d'ya say, hmmm?
A very cool video from Squeaky Pig Productions. This guy will be working for Robot Chicken before you know it. |
