I'd ask how did I miss a Big Foot Christmas song for all these years, but there are actually many reasons I would have. 2013 was a bad year for me in relation to this blog. We didn't even do a List that year. Also, I tend to shy away from Christmas novelty records. And I can't find any evidence that "Big Ol' Christmas Tree" was ever available through Amazon or iTunes or even CD Baby, which are my most frequent Christmas music haunts. If it was ever available on Bandcamp, it sure isn't anymore. But, if you want to add this Wheeland Brothers classic in the making to your digital library, you can find it at Google Play and something called Beatport (well I've never been to Beatport, but I kinda like the music...they say the ladies are insane there, but I really don't remember). The virtual cover art is so awesome, I'd spring for a vinyl single, should the Brothers ever decide to release one.
An Indie act from Southern California, the Wheeland Brothers describe their sound as Beach Rock Reggae. Some others call it Flip Flop Hip Hop (just a fun alliterative way of saying music for the beach--or flip flop--crowd). Generally, they're all about sun, sand, and some silliness, now and then. You'll hear some Hawaiian and Folk influence, too, in much of their music.
"Big Ol' Christmas Tree" was not the first dip in the Christmas ocean taken by the Wheeland Brothers. They released "Christmas for Surfers" in 2012 (a parody of John Denver's "Christmas for Cowboys") and returned to seasonal tuneage in 2017 with "White Sand Christmas". (Pssst. Don't tell nobody but "White Sand Christmas" can be downloaded for free right here.) But neither is quite a match for "Big Ol' Christmas Tree". Gotta say, a full Christmas album from these boys could be a lotta fun. Whaddaya say, Wheelands?
