This is the second year for "Merry Christmas, Provo"--which features Utah musicians, artists and producers banding together to raise money for the local Sub For Santa program to bring Christmas to less fortunate boys and girls. 100% of the proceeds from the CD will go to the program. And, this year, their goals include pairing children with literacy specialists to make sure disadvantaged kids have both the skills and the books to learn and grow. That's not the only goal of the program, of course (and nor is the Christmas CD their only fundraising effort), but it does show that their idea is growing in scope and effect and that the people involved are thinking and growing, too.
"Merry Christmas, Provo" was an idea that started small and grew into not just a Christmas CD, but a series of concerts and videos as well. As most of us aren't anywhere near Utah, buying the CD can be our contribution and, hey, it just happens to be pretty awesome Christmas music at a very affordable price, so its solidly a win-win-win all around.
The "time sensitive" issue, here, is that, until December 1, your purchase of "Merry Christmas, Provo, Volume 2" comes with a complimentary download of last year's Christmas CD. So, for just $10 (plus $2.50 for shipping), you'll get the music from both the Provo Christmas collections. They may even still have a few physical copies of last year's CD and, while they last, your order of this year's CD (before Devember 1) could come with last year's CD and maybe even a t-shirt (but I'm not promising anything on that front--just know you'll get the 2014 download for sure). The CDs themselves should be shipping around December 1, if not before, but the downloads of both volumes will be instantaneous (for all of us "instant gratification" types).
All told, "Merry Christmas, Provo, Volume 2" is a much more varied and satisfying album than it's predecessor (Volume One was good, but Volume 2 is great). Every song on this one shines bright, every turn will bring a smile to your face. The Lower Lights open with an Americana "Once In Royal David's City" (and, if you're a regular, here, you'll recognize that one from 2013's "Sing Noel"). Late Night Alumni sparkle on the dreamy original "Silent Lights". Coral Bones add new dimensions and a snappier tempo to "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day". "Shepherd's Song" from Brian Kershisnik & Steve Vistaunet is a warming Folk song. Lovestrange take an Indie Rock/Post Punk approach to "The Wassail Song" (listening to them do it, I'm wondering if that wasn't the first Punk Rock song ever, back in 1790). Mimi Knowles contributes a soulful and spacey rendition of "O Little Town Of Bethlehem". There's even some family friendly Hip-Hop from Rhyme Time Television (go download his song, yo); you'll dig it, I promise.
Again, order "Merry Christmas, Provo, Volume 2" by December 1 to ensure you'll also get a complimentary download of Volume 1. I imagine we'll get some new videos as the season rolls out, too, so keep your eyes peeled for that. You can learn more about the project here, here, and here. And here is where you go to place your order.
