One of the things that makes Christmas music so fascinating is that so many of the songs are really sad songs that are being cheerfully sung. The classics, of course, were a bit less deceptive--there's more than a hint of melancholy in "White Christmas" and "I'll Be Home For Christmas". But "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" and "Last Christmas" are two examples of sad songs usually performed with energy and joy to spare. That's why I'm so drawn to this version of the Phil Spector/Darlene Love classic. Laurie Cameron sings it perfectly. You can feel the heartbreak and yearning. Oh, God, yes! Stick this one in your bleak Mid-winter, eh?
