You don't want to know what's on my mind today. Trust me. I'm not even sure I want to know what's on my mind today.
Thankfully, Sofia Talvik released her annual Christmas present over the weekend and none of us have to know what's on my mind today.
I can't believe there's anyone out there who isn't, by now, familiar with Sofia and her Christmas tradition. But, if there is someone out there who doesn't know Sofia, she's a Swedish singer/songwriter and it's been an honor to follow her musical journey and her growth as an artist over the years. And, every year, she gives us a new Christmas song. For free! And they're always fantastic (if occasionally dark). I did a whole piece on Sofia's Christmas singles last year, so feel free to read it if you're hearing her for the first time. I will toss in, here, that I think my favorite is "A Berlin Christmas Tale". Without even tossing it on the virtual turntable, I can clearly hear her singing "But, Baby, it's Christmas" in a way that only she can and I can clearly feel that mixed sensation of a room without heat, snow falling through a hole in the roof, and looking out upon a beautiful city (the yin and yang of Christmas). I lived in such a room once, except that room didn't look out on anything worth seeing (I think the dumpster was the highlight); if you ever find yourself driving past Fall River, MA....keep driving (just sayin').
Of late, Sofia has been writing and recording music that probably hews closest to Americana (though that's a pretty broad swath of sounds). And this year's Christmas single, "Cold Cold Feet," I think, marks yet another chapter for Sofia. Because, to me, last year's "A Long Way Home" was straight up Americana while, to me, "Cold Cold Feet" sounds as though Sofia has taken aspects of Americana, made them her own, and incorporated them into her own unique Sofia Talvik sound.
"Cold Cold Feet" is a song about, and dedicated to, working women the world over. You often hear how tough it is for the working man. Well, it's at least as tough for the working woman, and almost certainly more so. The song features Hannah Ekstrom on the violin. It's available via Bandcamp. All of Sofia's previous Christmas songs remain available on Bandcamp as well. "Cold Cold Feet" is Sofia's tenth such single, so that's an entire album's worth of Sofia for Christmas.
