Weird that I've posted a lot this month without a single Christmas in July tune. Let's take care of that right now.
WALK IT OFF
Based in Chi-town, Walk It Off started off as a Relient K cover band. Nobody really wants to be a cover band. And, anyway, what's Relient K done recently? So Walk It Off went original and now do what they describe as "self-aware Chicago Pop Punk". They released their debut EP last year, "Inside Joke". "Christmas In July" was intended to be on "Inside Joke", but it didn't make it, for whatever reason. Better late than never, as "Christmas In July" arrived as a single on July 25. "Christmas In July" plays out the fake absurdity of the very concept against every day life, showing the latter to be genuinely absurd.
We were stringing lights while you were only stringing me along
After this faux holiday season I can't stand to hear another Christmas song
I tried making a sandman and all I ever got was crumbling dreams
But if it weren't for you I wouldn't have this valuable lesson it seems
Like who doesn't string lights and build a sandman for Christmas in July?
I’m taking my ugly sweater and my fruitcake and I am going home
I’d be better off this summertime Christmas by my fireplace alone
For the next five months, I’ll have to ask myself, “What would Jesus do?”
Because there's no I in Divine - at least the way I spell it - without you

Oh, and one item historians might want to note. I believe we have our first song reference, here, to July 25th being THE Christmas day for Christmas in July. Walk It Off might not have intended anything larger like that, but you know it's going to become "a thing", sooner or later, just as Christmas in July has.
