One of my favorite jokes was from Steven Wright. He had a very taciturn delivery and original observations that, combined, were extremely funny--certainly to me. So Steven says he went to the local 7-11 (or whatever chain it was). They had a big sign saying "Open 24 hours". But, as he gets there, the manager is locking up. Steven says, "Hey, why are you closing up? The sign says 'open 24 hours'." The manager turns to him and says, "Not in a row!" Obviously its funnier when he tells it.
Point is I was thinking about the fact that, at Stubby's, we try to cover all Christmas music. But, when I say that, I don't mean every single release. These days, I think that would be impossible anyway. What I mean when I say we try to cover it all is that we happily report on every genre. OK, so even that isn't entirely true. But really, do you believe someone who is a devoted fan of Classical music and nothing else is going to put up with my nonsense? I still try to include some Classical or Classical Crossover albums that might appeal to casual Classical fans. When I find them. And when I have the time. OK, so not very often. Jeez, why you bustin' my hump about this? We cover a lot of stuff, OK?
So I was happy to stumble across this Kickstarter campaign for the Chicago Folk collective, Old Lazarus' Harp. Some of the best emerging Folk artists in the mid-west are in the collective, the goal of which is redefining the Folk music experience through independent concerts, jams, and, yes, hootenannies. They cover all the traditional branches from that tree--Celtic, Cajun, Bluegrass, Old-Timey. This isn't Alt Folk or Indie Folk or Folk Rock or whatever. This is traditional Folk. And, when you go to an Old Lazarus' Harp show, its like buying the sampler tea collection you always give for Christmas to that guy from work who you don't know what he likes (and let me just say, he appreciates it...not 20 of them in the same year, but he appreciates it). And I'm guessing their Christmas album is going to be exactly like that--a wide selection of the different artists, bands and sounds that make up the collective.
I don't think Old Lazarus' Harp has named the album, yet. We've got no anticipated track list that I'm aware of. But, assuming they reach their modest goal, they expect you'll be getting your incentive rewards around mid-December. You've got until mid-day November 26 to ante up if you're interested. One thing I did notice is that the hard copy CDs are rather limited. That's not saying they won't make or aren't making more, but there are only about 250 available through the Kickstarter Campaign. At least for now. And, of course, there's always the digital download and some higher dollar rewards (tickets to the release show, posters, studio time--that's new--a credit in the liner notes; you know how this works).
